Vintage Boxing Gloves

  • Boxing was for much of human history a popular sport that had few rules beyond the prohibition of weapons, but still had its fair share of bare-knuckles, sucker punches, and cheap shots.
  • In the year 1866, the Marquess of Queensberry consented to new rules; 3 minute rounds, no gouging or wrestling, and made gloves compulsory.
  • Bare-Knuckled boxing remained popular for quite some time, until 1892, when James Corbett set this rule straight by defeating the bare-fisted boxer John Sullivan with the new established rules.
